Design Brief

The Hakeem Group approached Retail Experience Design to re-design and remodel Norville Opticians flagship practice in Gloucester. For the team at Norville Opticians, maintaining the heritage of the historic practice, which has served its community for over 120 years, was crucial to the practice design and refurbishment.

However, whilst the existing space was generous in heritage and character, the practice environment was tired and outdated, and included the hallmarks of an old school shop fit, including extensive use of display rods, poor lighting, and standard base units.

Our Approach

To achieve the objective of creating a successful practice space, Retail Experience worked with a range of key stakeholders to deliver a strategic overview of the direction of the practice and to understand the key fundamentals required in the re-configured space, such a frame numbers, brands, and customer/patient journey touchpoints as well as the business strategy.

Retail Experience Design’s vision was inspired by the heritage and charm of Norville’s history, and with several protected original heritage features, the intention was to remain sympathetic to the building architecture and brand story. An example of this includes the retained 19th-century wooden shopfront facia, a charming original and protected feature, detailing a vintage font style script, which became the influence for the design direction and key components such a graphics, signage, colours, and finishes.

Nonetheless, the brief was complex and multifaceted, requiring a strategic approach built on the key principles of retail design. However, however the result achieved:

  • An inspiring and unique concept design inspired by the Norville brand
  • Elevation of the dispensing proposition to position dispensing at the heart of the customer journey
  • Increased capacity for more patients and customers (without building works)
  • Space for additional testing and state of the art pre-test space

The concept for Norville Opticians isn’t just aesthetically advanced and enriched, the new design allows the practice environment to deliver on retail practicality and drastically improve the effectiveness of space, whilst improving the overall patient/customer journey.
