The Challenge

Peter Smith Opticians were ready to upscale — moving just a few doors down to a larger unit that would give them space to grow their retail offer, increase testing capacity, expand specialist clinical services and futureproof the practice.

The new site gave them scale — it’s the largest single-storey optical practice we’ve worked on to date. But the challenge wasn’t size. It was the building’s long, narrow shape, combined with its age and structural limitations, that made it far from a blank canvas.

We needed to reimagine the space entirely — transforming an awkward layout into a modern, high-performing optical environment that still felt rooted in local character and heritage.

What we did

We used the building’s unusual shape to our advantage, applying smart spatial planning to guide the patient–customer journey. Zoning was key — with thoughtful use of colour, materials, fixtures and fittings to create flow, define areas, and make the layout feel intuitive.

Architectural constraints meant working around structural walls, with steel intervention needed to open up key areas. But, every decision was made to ensure the space functioned smoothly for both patients and staff.

This was also a chance to redevelop the brand. We created a new logo and colour palette that felt bolder and more confident, while still connected to the practice’s heritage. That identity carried through the interior design scheme — creating a warm, welcoming space that reassures loyal patient and customers and appeals to new ones.

We turned a complex footprint into a clear, confident customer–patient journey — the ideal foundation for a growing optical practice.

The finished space feels calm and striking, with a layout that flows naturally and supports both customers and staff.

From expanded retail and dedicated dispensing to increased testing and thoughtful waiting areas, every part of the design works hard to elevate the original practice and deliver a seamless experience.
