The Challenge

Pharmacy First initiative is reshaping the role of community pharmacy, yet many high street pharmacies still follow a traditional dispensing-led model that doesn’t support this new direction. Lincolnshire Co-op wanted their environments to respond to the shift and asked us to design a new store concept — a future-ready pharmacy that could act as a blueprint for change and scale across 40+ locations.

What we did

We started by listening — speaking with pharmacy teams, reviewing stores across the estate and identifying the barriers first-hand. The issues were clear: poor flow, little privacy, unclear zoning and a layout for dispensing rather than modern community healthcare.

Lincolnshire Co-op wanted to change that — moving from a traditional model to a space centred around community care. Our role was to rethink how the pharmacy works for patients and for the people operating it every day.

We redesigned the layout around simplicity and flow: a welcoming arrival, clear service zones, accessible and dedicated consultation rooms and an easier path through retail and dispensary. The brand and interior identity were refreshed too, including a new logo to create a warm, community-led feel supported by clearer signage and wayfinding.

Working with T3 a specialist dispensary designer ensured operational efficiency aligned with the concept. We also produced a full Design Intent Package, enabling Lincolnshire Co-op to tender confidently and appoint the right contractor for delivery, quality and cost.

Results

The new Birchwood Health Hub marks a major step forward in how the pharmacy environment supports community healthcare. The new design ensures patients get a better experience, while pharmacy teams work with fewer barriers — creating a space that now forms the blueprint for rollout across 40+ Lincolnshire Co-op pharmacies.

Result

We worked with RED on the concept and design of our “Pharmacy of the Future” with a deliberately broad brief.

They delivered a solution that not only looked exceptional, but directly addressed critical areas such as how customers feel in our pharmacy, overall ambience and environment, and significantly improved the commercial use of space – particularly within the retail zone.

Since implementation, we’ve received an overwhelming amount of positive patient and colleague feedback regarding the look, feel, and ergonomics of the space, alongside double-digit growth in customer satisfaction.
