Design Brief

From the outset Park Vision’s brief was crystal clear – to create a boutique, out-of- town destination eye clinic by transforming their existing practice, a regency styled house, located within the exclusive Nottingham Park Clinic, comprising of a variety of esteemed clinical specialists.

Park Vision had previously upscaled their physical space, however continued growth resulted in little room for further expansion.

“we hit 2019 busting out in all areas…not enough room for stock, no space for browsing patients that dropped in, and very difficult for two people to be dispensed with privacy. We felt the “Park Vision” experience they came for was being compromised. I had a beautiful spacious examination room, but it was, to be honest, indulgent, and not the best use of a large area”

With an enviable reputation for their extensive range of chic frames and sunglasses, state of the art optical equipment, and award-winning optical care; the design challenge provided by Park Vision was ambitious.

Design vision
“I wanted the world…a beautiful boutique clinic, but space for all things “necessarily boring” that an optical practice need. A unique design - I wanted a “wow” factor…but you still need a focimeter, screwdrivers, and space for cases and till rolls! I wanted my examination room to rival the Starship Enterprise… but contact lens trial boxes and trial lenses were not that sexy!”

The design approach was to translate the brand and customer values into the physical environment, whilst creating a stunningly bespoke and highly effective optical practice.

An outstanding, unique, and interesting customer journey was imperative to the design strategy, whilst the design vision was to achieve a contemporary, stylish, and chic interior, fused with a warm and welcoming tone to feel inclusive to all patients and customers.

The existing practice appeared small, requiring the full reconfiguration of the space to create the perception of a larger environment, whilst also utilising the additional space Park Vision secured as part of the upscaling the property. Also, a wall which featured between retail and testing was omitted to fully open the space; key zones were then created and aligned to the key touchpoints within the customer journey, resulting in testing being relocated to an independent area.

The testing suite relied on the technical ability and skilful ergonomics of Retail Experience Design to transform the compact space into a bespoke clinical area; whilst the design vision and use of materials were inspired by Scandinavian and European design trends, where retailers commonly and confidently mix materials and textures. Raw concrete and earthy materials combined with polished materials including laminated timber and glass provided a strong architectural vision of how the space would pull together.

“Park Vision is everything I wanted and more…it is simply stunning…but more importantly, it works!!! I remember saying to Retail Experience Design that I didn’t want “a beautifully fitted kitchen that when you start using it there is clutter everywhere and a messy draining board” Yes…you are starting to see their challenge!!
Every space is utilized, behind every possible flat surface is a hidden cupboard, we have so much storage space, hidden sockets, subtle downlighting, a secret frame adjustment area, a coffee machine tucked behind a flush cupboard, and even a recharging socket for patients to recharge their phones when having a coffee. It is spacious, clutter-free – patients walk in and just say “wow” – I am super proud to call it my practice.
I have a futuristic examination room – clean white surfaces, washbasin, hospital taps, modern towel dispenser, and all testing room clutter is stashed behind flush cupboards”

The visually striking interior design delivered a sensational optical environment, whilst achieving a personalised, consultative, and engaging customer journey with dispensing at its heart.

The display of Park Vision’s incredible range of frames and brands originally relied on acrylic panels and overcrowded rods, however bespoke designed display units and features added to the theatre of the design, as well as elevating the diverse range of collections and brands.
What’s more, illuminated fabric lightboxes featuring Park Vision customers wearing their frames added warmth and personality into the space.

Careful consideration and treatment of the ceiling and lighting complimented the products whilst adding to the ambience of the retail space. Large format mirrors, soft and rich furnishings contrasted perfectly with the mix of raw and polished materials.

With testing positioned separately, it allowed for complete focus on the clinical experience, magnifying the exceptional start-of-the-art equipment. Skillful ergonomics ensured the space was highly functional, whilst the use of high gloss materials, colour changing lighting, and illuminated branding created interior design theatre into the compact space.

“With us now re-opening our doors and getting back to a new version of Optometry I think we are much better placed to demonstrate to our patients that “we have got this”…..they should expect to feel safe and our practice is clean, spacious and a delight to be in.  I would not hesitate to recommend Dean and the team at Retail Experience Design….if you are reading this looking at the old carpet, cluttered shelves, nasty frame bars, and a tired pile of magazines……raise your game and pick up the phone now.  You won’t regret it!”
